A specially-equipped car for paramedics is now on the road.
The Volkswagen Touran is one of four cars bought by the South East Coast Ambulance Service for its paramedic practitioners.
The practitioners are paramedics with advanced skills who are able to diagnose and treat patients closer to or in their own homes.
These patients often have long-term health problems and although they have phoned 999 they do not usually need an emergency ambulance or have to go to hospital.
The practitioners are able to supply various medications and stitch wounds, for example, as well as being able to refer patients if necessary to other healthcare professionals.
The vehicles will be equipped with a full range of medical apparatus, including wound care kits and extra diagnostic equipment.
Each car costs approximately £45,000 to buy and equip and is also fitted with emergency lights and sirens.
The first vehicle will be based in the Mid Sussex area with the rest are destined for Brighton, Littlehampton and Hailsham.
Paramedic practitioner David Wells said: "These new vehicles will assist our staff to continue providing a high standard of patient care, which can often be delivered within the local community or even the patient's own home."
