Ever fancied your chances of beating Brighton and Hove Albion's centre forwards in a penalty competition?

This was the fundraising challenge enjoyed by sports stars of the future at Hopscotch Nursery, in Portland Road, Hove, who put their football heroes through their paces for Comic Relief.

Children aged one to five took on strikers Gary Hart and Alex Revell in front of goal and managed to score for charity.

Nursery manager Gemma Middleton said: "The players took turns in goal while the kids took a shot at them, and you'll be surprised how many of them hit the net."

Robins Nest, in Perrymount Road, Haywards Heath, transformed into a scene from a children's book when staff and kids arrived at the nursery clad in their favourite story character to raise £40.

Deputy manager Kate Harding said: "There were a lot of Bob The Builders, bunnies and fairies running about.

"I came as Miffy Rabbit, a character from my childhood."

Calvin Klein would not have turned green with envy if he had seen unstylish students at Tavistock and Summerhill School in Haywards Heath during The Worst Fashion Show of All Time which raised £250.

Deputy Head Joel Wood said: "There were some simply awful creations out there, as well as others which made the judges helpless with laughter.

"All I would say is that maybe some of the children should avoid fashion design as a career choice for the future."

School children at Blatchington Mill, in Nevill Avenue, Hove, swapped an item of their school uniform for a bright red garment to raise more than £250.

Year seven development officer, Moon Qureshi, said: "Everywhere you looked there were red scarfs, ties, shoes, socks, bracelets and belts.

"The children really used their imagination and everyone, including the staff, looked a bit wacky."

Children at Sticky Kids Arts and Crafts, in Salts Recreation Ground, Seaford, took the meaning of red nose day literally when they painted their noses to raise £25.

It seemed like everyone got into the fundraising spirit - and even a trio of dogs were seen roaming the county in fancy dress.

Staff at Oathall Veterinary Surgery, in Oathall Road, Haywards Heath, arrived at work wearing wigs, hats, colourful shirts and red noses.

They made sure Pepper, a spaniel, Gizmo, a Yorkshire Terrier, and Meg, a Border Collie cross, got a piece of the action.

Vet nurse, Vicki Turner, said: "We offered free claw clippings in return for a charitable donation.

"We didn't set a limit of how much we should raise but we are trying to get as much as possible."
