A bus driver was left shaken when his double decker bus became wedged under a railway bridge ripping off half the roof.

Sussex Police were called to Barnham railway bridge, near Bognor, at 1.48pm today after the Solent Blue Line bus driver attempted to drive under the bridge after he misjudged the vehicle's height.

It is not known if any passengers were on the bus at the time but the driver was not injured.

Engineers from the bus company came to the scene to remove the bus from under the bridge and traffic was diverted for several hours while the road was closed.

Engineers from Network Rail also checked the structure of the bridge but a spokesman said there was no delays to train services as the line was already closed for engineering works.

The line is expected to reopen at 4am tomorrow in time for the first train service of the day.
