Frankly, Brighton needed to be ashamed on Tuesday evening.

Playing host to the self-named ‘Queen of Bounce,’ New Orleans’ gay rapper and activist Big Freedia played to a hugely undersold crowd in a city you would imagine being well primed for her brand of overtly raucous, party music.

The very friendly audience that did show up more than compensated for any gaps in the room.

At many points they joined her onstage to present their rear ends - in true ‘bounce’ style, as klaxons and breakdancing went off all around them.

This was an evening devoted to the ass, the shaking of it, and just occasionally strobe lights.

Freedia remained in high spirits, dressed in a marijuana leaf tracksuit, even calling out for the venue’s staff to get onstage with her and shake their rumps – to which they gladly obliged after clambering down from the bar.

“It’s gotta be about quality, not quantity tonight!” Freedia shouted, beaming towards the end, never once having broken into a sweat despite her continued vibrations. Then, after a second, short set from her DJ, she and her two dancers were gone.

Earth-shaking.
