An NHS centre under threat of closure will now remain open.

About 60 people working in the NHS Primary Care Support team in Lancing were facing redundancy after NHS England announced plans for a shake-up of support services across the country.

Some workers accepted voluntary redundancy but the remaining staff have now been told the centre will stay open but offer a reduced service.

The team runs a range of services which support GPs, dentists, pharmacists and opticians.

The service was formed in April 2013 as part of the national reorganisation of the NHS and offices around the country are managed overall by NHS England.

A spokeswoman for Unison said staff were still feeling uncertain about their long-term future and the union would be keeping a close eye on developments.

A spokesman for NHS England said: “NHS England is consolidating the back-office functions which support primary care and we have consulted with staff on possible sites closures.

“As a result of that consultation the Lancing office will not be closing. “Some staff at Lancing opted for voluntary redundancy and will leave the service over the next two months, so we will be reviewing the services that remain at the Lancing office.”
