Asda at Brighton Marina has been evacuated and three fire engines are on the scene.
The supermarket has been closed after smoke was reported coming from the substation beneath the store.
Three fire engines are on the scene and are on standby but currently there are no reports of a fire.
Customers are being turned away at the entrance to the car park.
Engineers from UK Power Networks will be in attendance to investigate the problem.
UPDATE: A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: "At 12.36pm today we were alerted about an incident at Asda in Brighton Marina. Our engineers attended and confirmed our equipment was operating normally."
