A Sussex Police spokesman said: “At 7.10am a car left the road on the northbound A22 at East Hoathly and hit a tree.
"The man driving the car, who was the sole occupant, was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and an assessment of his condition has not yet been received.
"The road was closed in both directions but is expected to reopen shortly.”
