A MAN is trying to scam people out of money by knocking on doors and begging for cash.

Police are urging people not to hand over money if you are visited by a man with a dark complexion, in his mid 30s with neatly cropped black hair and wearing a short dark jacket.

He claims to be penniless and needs to get back to London as he was due to appear in court.

He visited homes in Clinton Crescent and Springfield Road in St Leonards on Tuesday [May 12] and police said one resident handed over money but the second refused.

PCSO Andy Hubbard, from Hastings neighbourhood policing team, advised people not to hand over money and to call the police.

He said: “There was a similar case of this last year in the same area whereby a man was calling at people's doors asking for money, equipped with a sob story. His story was a façade and he was deceiving people for their money.”
