Schoolchildren were put through their paces at a cycling proficiency course.

Pupils at Harbour Primary and Nursery School in Newhaven took to their bikes for the Bikeability safety course on Monday.

The course is designed to get children up-to-speed on the next generation of cycle safety while helping to build youngsters’ confidence.

Katherine Cotton, of Harbour Primary and Nursery, said: “The kids have been really enjoying it. They’ve been out on their bikes in the sunshine and are being taught about safety when riding on the roads, so it’s really beneficial.

“There are two levels to the course so they learn everything they need to before taking to the roads by themselves.”

Bikeability is delivered at schools courtesy of Department for Transport cash. Local authorities are asked to apply for the scheme to take advantage of funding.
