Imagine the dilemma when you see your pet in trouble. Your heart says save them at all costs regardless of the consequences.

But your head says there is a chance your actions could put you or others in danger too.

The coastguard and an RNLI lifeboat crew were called because two dog owners listened to their hearts – rushing into the sea after seeing their pets swept into crashing waves.

While both owners were seen safely to shore as well as one of the dogs, another called Sergio is still missing.

His owners hope by some miracle he is safe and desperately want him home.

The incident prompted a warning from the coastguard begging dog owners not to rush into the sea after their pets, but to call 999 and ask for the maritime team instead.

The appeal also advised dogs were kept on leads when the sea was boisterous.

No-one blames the owners for their quick reactions in a bid to save their beloved animals.

But the sea is an unforgiving and unpredictable environment and we must acknowledge when raising the alarm what may be the safest and most sensible option.

Anyone who puts their life at risk for another must also remember that they also, however unintentionally, put the lives of those who come to their rescue at risk, too.
