A fan drove into the grounds of Paul McCartney's home after bursting through the security gates in his car.
Security guards called 999 after the man broke into the property at Peasmarsh, near Rye, fearful that he would try to attack the former Beatle.
Sir Paul was not in during the incident on Friday but was expected home later that day.
The middle-aged intruder failed to stop when security staff called out and drove across fields and gardens. He was detained by police after a three-mile chase to Northiam.
A Sussex Police spokesman said he was detained under the Mental Health Act.
He said the man did not break into the inner boundary of the grounds.
In 1999 McCartney's former bandmate George Harrison survived being stabbed in the chest by a crazed fan at his home in Henley, Oxfordshire.
