The owners of the Palace Pier have been accused of "arrogantly" attempting to wreck plans for a futuristic new tourist attraction.

The Argus reported last week that work on the landmark 183-metre i360 tower at the West Pier is due to start this summer after the Government gave the granted permission.

But the tower, which is expected to attract around 500,000 visitors a year and provide a £10 million boost for the city's economy, could have been set for months of delays after the Noble Corporation, owners of the Palace Pier, objected to it.

Readers of The Argus have accused Noble of "disgraceful" tactics and believe there could be a backlash from local people boycotting the pier.

Comments posted on The Argus website included one from "Paul from Brighton" who said: "Excellent news, although such a shame that Noble were able to slow down the process.

"A disgraceful act of arrogance that could potentially have robbed Brighton and Hove of such an exciting structure.

"Considering the i360 is supposed to attract thousands of new visitors I do not see where Noble were coming from.

"The right decision has now been made and I look forward to seeing the progress."

Jeff from Brighton said: "The Palace Pier is becoming an eyesore and perhaps they should abstain from their petty objections and get on with making the pier an alternative attraction to attract people who will spend their money there.

"Some of the sideshows and the fun fair look - tired. New ideas and attractions are needed rather than objecting to others with new ideas.

"Noble are in danger of attracting a backlash from locals. Without their support Noble could find themselves having a difficult time.

"Build the tower and let us get up there and enjoy the views."

The Noble Corporation objected to the i360 plans amid fears its own profits would be hit by the tourist attraction.

However many people believe it will actually boost its profits.

James Snodgrass, from Brighton, said: "What surprises me is how ignorant the Noble Organisation seem to be about the tourism business.

"Another large attraction in Brighton will help, not hinder, the Palace Pier's popularity."

Paul Jones, also from Brighton, said: "Their short sightedness is staggering, who do they think they are, apart from greedy profiteers?"

The Noble Corporation was unavailable to comment.
