A water company has got into the Easter spirit by building an egg-shaped sewer under a chicken farm.

Southern Water are installing the sewer at Brookside and Riverside chicken farm in Horam, near Heathfield.

The £750,000 project will help prevent flooding in the nearby Vines Cross Road and Millbrook Close.

Southern Water programme director Karl Taylor said: "This is an excellent scheme to help prevent flooding.

"It's very fitting we are using this 300m long egg shaped sewer through a chicken farm.

"The shape of the sewer means when the flows of wastewater are low, the water can keep moving in the narrower bottom end.

"But in heavy rainfall there is plenty of capacity in the top end of the egg to prevent flooding."

The project is being carried out by contractors 4Delivery and is expected to be completed at the end of April.
