The hold ups and congestion along the A27 appear to be being deliberately and unnecessarily created by the authorities so a congestion charge can be brought in (Letters, February 22).

If a bypass is not to be built, the obvious solution to problems with the road through Worthing is to do the same as through Lancing: make it two lanes with no crossing against the traffic all the way from Lyons Farm right to the far side of Worthing.

This could be done without too much difficulty. There is no need for great wide grass verges all the way along the road and there would be no traffic lights at the Downlands pub as there would just be a left-turn filter lane and no right turns at all.

The roundabout at Grove Lodge could be made a quarter of its present size, with the road leading up to it divided into two clearly marked lanes: left for the A24 and Worthing town centre, and a right-hand lane to continue straight on along the A27, which, if the roundabout was reduced to a sensible size, would be virtually straight across.

There would be a footbridge to cross at Swandean Hospital but no right turn from Salvington Hill as this is a ridiculously dangerous place to cross.
