England goalkeeper David James is saving the planet with a car running on rape seed oil.

The Portsmouth player picked up his hefty Chrysler 300 from mechanics in Upper Beeding, Steyning, having had it rebuilt in the greenest form possible.

Rather than belching harmful carbon dioxide the car will now run on the purest plant oil money can buy, engineers said.

Mr James is planning on having his own filling station built at his home in Devon.

Matthew Bulba, director of Blooming Futures in Old Shoreham Road, said: "He was absolutely blown away with it. He came with his son and they're going to do a feature on it on TV before the Man Utd game this weekend.

"It's a car that can now run on pure farm-grown rape sead oil, the greenest fuel you can find.

"It was quite an in-depth conversion and it will run just as well now as it did in the past. He has to commute to a lot of games but the car's got a big fuel tank so he can get quite a long way without using a petrol station and we're setting him up with his own fueling point at his home."
