The family of a young man who died in an horrific car crash have spoken of their grief.

Matthew Hatfield, 22, was killed along with colleague Gary McCrimmon, 31, when the car they were in ploughed into a road sign in Saint Hill Road, East Grinstead, last Wednesday.

The driver of the white Renault Clio, Oliver Glomet, 22, of Vowels Lane, has been charged with causing their deaths while over the limit.

The family of Mr Hatfield, who worked as concierge at the five star Alexander House Hotel in Turner's Hill, yesterday paid a touching tribute to him.

Sister Rebecca, 25, who lives in Victoria, London, spoke emotionally about her younger brother who had worked at the hotel since last November.

She said: "We are devastated by the tragedy and we are struggling to come to terms with it.

"I spoke to Matthew the day of the crash. We were chatting about when he was coming to visit me next.

"It's a terrible shock for the whole family because he was such a lovely brother.

"He absolutely loved it in Turners Hill. I have never seen him so happy in a job.

"He was a people's person and it was by far the best job he had done and was the happiest he had ever been.

"He will never be replaced and will never be forgotten."

Mr Hatfield enjoyed playing football, listening to music, particularly rock band Oasis, keeping fit and socialising.

Mother Valerie and father Stephen, of Prestatyn, in North Wales, last saw their son when they visited Turners Hill two weeks ago.

During their visit to the hotel they met the other victim, barman Mr McCrimmon, who told them about his family in Glasgow.

They said: "Matthew was a loving son and touched all who met him. We will miss him terribly."

Brother James, 26, said: "We spoke on the phone several times a week sharing our love of football and talking about the family.

"I will miss him so much and he will never be forgotten."

Mr Hatfield's funeral will be held at 1pm on Friday (April 20) at Mant Hall Road Presbyterian Church in Prestatyn.

Glomet and the unnamed front passenger, 23, were cut from the car by firefighters after the crash last Wednesday morning (April 11).

They were taken to East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, for treatment but were released on Thursday.

Glomet, a French national, appeared at Crawley Magistrates Court on Friday charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by careless driving while over the prescribed limit and having excess alcohol in his blood.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court on July 20.
