Knightmare Live is a great, well tested concept; pick a cherished piece of pop culture, amplify the experience and get your audience involved.

The concept of the original television show was simple – one child blindfolded by a huge helmet is guided through a series of tasks and interactions by a group of friends.

Knightmare Live retained this idea at its core with a team of audience members onstage, navigating the obstacles created, encountering goblins, witches and dragons.

The cast of Knightmare played their roles with a mischievous energy, playing with the volunteer team onstage and the expectations of the audience. They allowed the format of the show to give structure to an altogether different experience; a tongue-in-cheek, nostalgic story fused with standup and a huge dollop of self-awareness and mockery.

The show was charming in its ramshackle and thrown together nature. Half an hour late to start, holes in the puppets and the set actually fell down half way through the second half, however the performers used these trials and tribulations to add more humour despite sweltering in their heavy costumes.

A very enjoyable piece of improvised theatre riding the wave of 1990s nostalgia.
