A SCHOOL has revealed plans for a special bus that will go that extra mile and take pupils into space.

Mile Oak Primary School has submitted an application to set up a science school bus as an inspiring teaching space for the next decade.

And they have brought in a man who knows one or two things about converting public transport into unlikely uses to help drive the project forward.

Adam Collier-Woods spent £15,000 of his own money two years ago converting a 30-year-old bus into a quirky holiday destination called Big Green Bus.

The school was donated the vehicle by Brighton and Hove Bus Company earlier this year and it has already been regularly used for science and creative writing lessons.

But the project is now set to accelerate after the school won an education award and £10,000 in the process.

Under plans submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council, the school hopes to create two distinct learning zones in the bus focusing on the skies above and the ground below.

The school aims to move the bus from its current base in the car park of Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA) to a permanent site on the primary school’s field.

As well as being used by Mile Oak Primary pupils, it is hoped the bus could become a teaching resource for schools across the city.

The school has given assurances it will not overlook any neighbouring properties.

Mr Collier-Woods said he hoped to start work on the science bus in September after the busy summer period for Big Green Bus which opened at its new location in Whitesmith near Ringmer last weekend.

The 44-year-old from Brighton had hoped to open at his new site in April but was delayed by the planning process. Although he is now booked up until October.

He said he had plans to convert some 1930s trailers into further accommodation on the site as well as a hot tub, pizza oven and beehive having moved from his previous location near Polegate.

He added: “It’s a fantastic project although very different to mine and I’m very excited to do another bus.

“We have had a few meetings and there are some really good ideas.

“I think it will take two to three months to do it but it’s also about planning when would be a good time to do a grand opening.”
