CHILDREN looked on as the wonders of science unfurled in front of them.

Youngsters made alien masks, fruit juice and solar-powered cars at the council-run summertime event.

The day in Haywards Heath last week was one of three free Play Days put on by Mid-Sussex district council this August.

Children have also raced space-hoppers and unravelled the secrets of the Martian code, with the help of immersive theatre company Goat and Monkey and experts from Fizz Pop Science.

They got stamps for taking part in each activity and were entered into a prize draw for the chance to win an iPod shuffle.

Play Day is billed as a celebration of children’s right to play and an attempt to highlight the importance of play in children’s lives.

Councillor Pru Moore, cabinet member for leisure and sustainability, said: “It can be really difficult for parents to keep their little ones entertained over the school summer holidays.”

The three events, in Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and East Grinstead, were organised by Mid Sussex District Council with support from other local councils.

Sponsorship was provided by the Bell Group, Burgess Hill Town Team, the Lions, Fun Bags Party Shop and the East Grinstead Business Association.
