Readers have congratulated The Argus for exposing the behaviour of city gangs.

Following our investigation published on Saturday, dozens of people visited theargus.co.uk to register their contempt for the gangs of youths who use websites to boast about taking part in attacks and drinking alcohol.

One poster, Lin from Hove, said: "Well done to The Argus for reporting this. We need police walking on the beat again."

This newspaper revealed how two gangs, calling themselves Yung Offenderz and the IDC, use mobile phones and the internet to congratulate themselves for "happy slap" assaults where members of the public are punched or kicked and footage published online.

The police are sometimes powerless to act because perpetrators cannot be tracked down or are too young to be arrested.

Detectives say they are receiving daily calls from the public reporting the activities of the Yung Offenderz and the IDC.

Rob, from Brighton, visited our site to say: "The law needs changing, children should be made responsible for their actions from the age of ten and should have no anonymity when it comes to reporting."

Sussex Police are to have a major crackdown on antisocial behaviour by young people by launching a special response team.

Police officers will visit schools and bus passengers will be invited to use a confidential text service to report trouble as it happens. Passengers will be asked to provide information about the route and say if the behaviour is "hate motivated".

But A Gold, from Brighton, responded to the story saying: "Nice report on these clowns from Louise Acford. It's a shame sod all will come of it apart from maybe a slightly larger bulge in the police dossier.

"What does "hate" motivated' mean? And why is it important? The victim suffers just the same whether it's hate motivated or not. I'm guessing they are all hate motivated anyway."

Some readers called for high visibility patrols, more CCTV and zero tolerance from police.

David from Brighton said: "Brighton and Hove is a small city. Why is it so hard for the police to get the evidence and witnesses organised and throw the book at these pathetic scum?

"They are even stupid enough to put videos of themselves committing serious crimes on the internet, never mind CCTV evidence from buses and the streets on Brighton."

Police told The Argus they thought a hardcore gang of ringleaders were responsible for a third of all violent attacks and robberies in central Brighton.
