In Hangleton and Knoll I notice that on their posters the Labour candidates are describing themselves as "Your Labour and Defend Council Housing Team".

What a cheek. The real Defend Council Housing have a copyright on the name, I think you'll find.

How wonderfully it sums up New Labour that they should first try to privatise the housing stock - then try to claim the credit for stopping the privatisation of the housing stock.

Hangleton residents have a chance to vote for the party that really defended council housing - vote Respect.

During our political careers we have always made a point of acting with integrity and being absolutely honest with the residents of Withdean ward (Letters, April 26).

We always strive to resolve any situation as fairly and quickly as possible and believe that our residents would very quickly see through misrepresentation of any situation, blurring of responses or inaction and firmly believe that our residents respect that honesty is the best policy at all times.

We are happy to stand on that record and would like all electors in Withdean Ward to know that irrespective of any personal or political belief, as long as we are elected to represent our residents, we will continue to do our utmost to reflect and support the views and aspirations of all those residents.

  • Ken and Ann Norman, Conservative candidates, Withdean ward

In response to letters from the independent candidates in Withdean ward whose only policy seems to be a personal attack on Ken Norman (Letters, April 26): I am happy to state that all Conservative members of the environment committee consistently opposed the introduction of the Prestonville parking scheme with the sure knowledge that once any parking scheme crossed the divide of Old Shoreham Road it would create fringe problems all the way to the bypass.

Ever since we have been pressing for schemes to assist the problems created in the southern part of the ward and traffic counts are being undertaken this week, to be followed by a second round of consultation.

The community association always fails to give adequate prior notice of its meetings and consequently it has been difficult for all councillors to attend, but we have all tried in spite of this difficulty to work with the association and support it wherever possible.

No instruction was ever received from Central Office on the schools issue. Ken, who sat on the working party, and all other members could not know the final shape of the proposals until the end when he and all Conservative councillors voted against them.

Ken and Ann Norman are two of the hardest working councillors I have ever known and always do their utmost to support their constituents. I could not choose two better colleagues.

Joe Harrison enquires how other voters will make their decision on May 3 (Letters, April 27).

Personally, I live in Bexhill, which is covered by Rother District Council. I shall be voting Conservative because they have guaranteed the lowest council tax in East Sussex for the next four years.

Walking around Kemp Town, you wouldn't think that only Labour has a chance in East Brighton of stopping the Tories, as their scare tactics claim. Everywhere you look, there are posters displayed in support of the Greens - far outnumbering all other parties.

The negative tactics of these Labour councillors show a lack of constructive ideas. Remember, this is the party that took us into a disastrous war on false pretences (once again using fear instead of facts) and have done little to really defend the environment (integrated transport policy, anybody?) If I and everyone in Queen's Park and East Brighton vote for what they believe then the Greens can and will take several seats, not the Tories.
