I couldn't work out whether Steve Kennard is against bus and taxi lanes or the buses (and presumably taxis) that use them being run by private companies, or both (Letters, April 28).

This month marks the 20th anniversary of a privatised Brighton and Hove Bus Company. Our impressive and consistent investment record in buses, new technology, service enhancements, environmental developments (all our fleet use biodiesel), staff and their facilities and growth in local jobs is evident for all to see and stands comparison with the dismal record when the companies were publicly owned by the council and government.

Ardent motorists should welcome bus and taxi lanes, including those on the A23 approach into Brighton and the soon to be built A259 Peacehaven to Ovingdean section. If more motorists are encouraged to switch to the consequentially improved buses, quicker taxi journeys or easier cycling, that would mean less cars queuing in front of Mr Kennard and his journey could be quicker too.

Just building an extra lane for motorists doesn't work, as it generates more cars. Take a look at the M25 for irrefutable evidence of that.
