What irritates me about Julie Burchill is her jaundiced view of the work of the Labour-led Brighton and Hove City Council.

Take, for example, the council house issue. She talked at length about Ken Bodfish's efforts to get tenants to accept the transfer of the ownership of social housing stock, but fails to point out the main reason Councillor Bodfish was removed as council leader by his Labour colleagues was this very issue. The new leader Simon Burgess has been far more even-handed and has respected the tenants' wishes to stick with the council as their landlord.

Likewise, Burchill waxes lyrical about a binmen's strike several years ago but fails to point out that since then the service has been brought in-house and is now working well.

At the root of Burchill's polemic is her belief that she is the authentic voice of the working classes.

But this is wearing a little thin. I used to be a big fan of Burchill's writing but like the Indian takeaway she once recommended, it's no longer to my taste.

So, I urge you: whatever factors motivate you to vote for or against Labour tomorrow, don't let Burchill's views be one of them.

Let the Labour-led council be judged on its record, yes, but in a balanced and even-handed way.
