A major junction identified as an accident hotspot is to get a facelift.

The Seven Dials roundabout is among the top 26 high risk areas in Brighton and Hove and the city council believes visibility is at the heart of the problem.

Road safety manager Honour Byford said assessments of the cost are being carried out.

Ms Byford said: "The potential is there for improvement in the area."

The plans have been welcomed by the district's residents, who would like to see the roundabout made more attractive.

The Seven Dials Directory, a publication for those living in the area, has asked readers for their opinions on the roundabout.

Editor Joan Evans started a petition for improvements. She said: "It's just so ugly.

"I feel that a lot of the attention from the council is on the seafront, when not a lot of people live there."

Her suggestions include a sundial or a centrepiece created by local artists.

Seven Dials resident Richard Gooch, a driving instructor who uses the roundabout regularly, said: "It's all well and good making it nicer to look at but really the priority should be to make it safer."

Although no plans have been finalised the look of the new roundabout is expected to marry road safety with attractive design.

Ms Byford said: "In my mind, good design and good engineering looks good."
