WHEN Josie Bamford was involved in a tragic car crash in Jamaica her life was turned upside down.

Her mother Kathleen Rawlinson, father Gary Bamford and sister, Brighton college student Caisie Muller, were all killed in the tragedy in 2011.

As well as having to dealing with the traumatic loss of her family, Josie was left with life-changing injuries, her teeth badly damaged.

The injuries ruined her confidence, leaving her unable to smile and socially isolated.

But thanks to a generous dental practice, her teeth have now been fixed.

Brighton Implant Clinic, in Church Road, Hove, has for the last three years offered free dental care to those unable to afford the high cost of implants.

Principal dentist Bruno Silva, who also owns branches in Brighton Hailsham and Worthing, donates the care to worthy recipients totally free of charge.

He began the offer after becoming sympathetic that not everyone in need could afford private care.

Those with mouth injuries get acute care on the NHS.

But because implants are considered cosmetic and non-essential, they are only offered in exceptional circumstances.

While the extensive work given to Josie has physically enabled her to eat without problems, the psychological benefits have been immeasurable.

She said: “It’s made a really big difference and I can find some happiness again. I don’t have to worry about smiling anymore.”

Dr Silva said: “We help people in exceptional circumstances – people recovering from cancer, or recovering from a car crash.

“Implants are a costly process and not everyone can afford it. Thankfully some people can afford it, but if you’re just out of university then it’s going to be very difficult.

“Problems with teeth might not always affect someone’s health, but it can definitely affect quality of life.

“The feeling for staff when we’ve helped someone is fantastic. The whole practice gets behind them, it’s really exciting. They feel they’re contributing and making a difference.”

Patients who are considered worthy of treatment are asked to participate in a short promotional video.
