If you drive in Andalusia from Tarifa to Cadiz, you'll find yourself travelling on many brand new dual carriageways.

If you glance across to the old road you will see a first class road.

Look even further over and you will see the original road - the goat track.

That goat track is the same width and in the same condition as our A27 - especially the stretch of road from Polegate to the Beddingham crossing.

I mention this because the infrastructure in this part of Andalusia is similar to Sussex, with lots of farmland, few houses and enough space to build a new road.

So why does a new modern road get built incredibly quickly in Spain?

I think the answer is the Spanish cared about the number of people killed on the old roads and did something about it fast.

We are one of the richest nations on Earth. The problem is not the money required to build this very necessary modern road. Just build it.
