It would’ve been unreasonable for fans to expect a wide range of tracks from Jane Weaver’s now seven-album solo career, and her set didn’t attempt this at her show on Saturday.

Instead, 99% of songs came from this year’s excellent The Silver Globe, although the set closed with the disco tinge of new single, I Need A Connection.

For touchstones, Goldfrapp’s first album would be the most obvious, with Weaver’s high, occasionally shrill voice at a similar pitch.

But at other times Broadcast or even Can were conjured up, her four-piece band locking into tight, repetitive grooves that gave a distinct snarl that contrasted with the slower album tracks like Stealing Gold or Don’t Take My Soul (tonight dedicated to the judges of the Mercury Prize).

Weaver herself was understandably the star, confident and comfortable in a sweltering Green Door Store throughout.

Note perfect, with a cosmic stage persona aping everyone from Kate Bush to Kurt Cobain, the crowd hung on her every word (save for an irritating rabble at the back).

Next time she hits the city, you feel it’ll be much larger venues that house her, after a long career build-up.
