It’s impossible not to be dancing by the end of a My Baby gig.

Having blown away an astounded crowd in the Spiegeltent during The Great Escape in May, the Dutch trio returned to Brighton to play a triumphant set as part of their UK and Netherlands-wide tour.

And what a performance. Inspired deep blues-electronica from talented guitarist Daniel da Freez built gradually into an increasingly powerful set fusing dance, blues, rock, gospel and soul.

Singer Cato van Dyck’s ethereal vocals seemed to channel a tantric Stevie Nicks, her brother Jost banging the skins with a primal power.

A band which defied any attempts at categorisation - although their Facebook page refers to it as “Delta trance Louisiana dub indie funk” - My Baby grabbed the audience’s attention from the start with a potent, electrifying sound.

Mining their two inspired albums to date, Shamanaid and My Baby Loves Voodoo, the trio enjoyed shouts of “spelen!” (play!) from an enthusiastic audience, some of whom had travelled significant distances to see them perform.

The band kept the vibe rising right until the end and the intense journey culminated in a freestyle freakout that left no one in any doubt this powerful trio deserve to be huge.

Cato says a third album should surface next summer. Mesmerizing.
