WATCH out Worthing I'm a Celebrity's most eccentric character is coming to a castle near you soon.

Lady Colin Campbell has even outdone Hove's very own eclectic king Chris Eubank on the ITV show I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! and has now revealed she was the one who bought Castle Goring for a cool £700,000 18 months ago.

The Jamaican-born writer who penned books about Princess Diana’s affair with James Hewitt has also let slip the reason she took up the offer to head down under for ITV – to pay for a new roof on the castle.

The Grade I listed building is in need of £2 million worth of repairs to make it habitable once more, with the roof work alone thought to cost £50,000.

Previous owner Clement Somerset refused to comment about the sale at the time, but spoke to The Argus yesterday and said: “It’s been in our family for 200 years, so we were caretakers of it I suppose for that time and now Lady Campbell is the occupier.

“It was lived in up until the war, then it was requisitioned before it was turned into a language school.

“They left and then it was prepared to go on the market.

“It was put in the hands of agents, as any other sale would.”

When asked why he sold it, he replied, “Why do you think?” in reference to the seven-figure building work that needs to be done on the property.

The grand building sits off the A27 to the west of Worthing in the South Downs National Park and has been home to novelist Mary Shelley and a Navy vice-admiral, among others.

Inside, it includes more than six bedrooms, inter-connecting reception rooms, a card room with leather wallpaper and a refurbished owner’s apartment at the top complete with kitchen, dining room, two bedrooms and a living room.

And Lady Campbell will be well versed in the castle’s drawback having spent time in the bush - the property only has one bathroom.

She is one of three Sussex interests in the jungle with Hove's Chris Eubank and Susannah Constantine - who has reportedly bought a £5 million estate in Sussex.
