Police have renewed an appeal for victims of bogus charity collectors to come forward.

Two people were arrested after they duped their victims into believing they were collecting money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

They toured bars and restaurants in George Street and Hove Street, Hove, on May 5.

The pair, a male and female, mainly targeted people sitting at outside tables enjoying a meal or a drink over the Bank Holiday weekend.

They handed out Marie Curie daffodils in exchange for donations which they then pocketed.

However, they were unaware that undercover police were watching them as part of an operation to target crime in the area.

A man and woman were arrested and police appealed for anyone who believed they were a victim of the con to come forward.

PC Rachel Carr said: "We haved heard from two people but we would like to hear from anyone else who may have been a victim.

"Of those who came forward one is nearly 80 and the other is a local businesswoman.

"She said the bogus collector entered her shop in Hove Street and asked her to make a donation.

"It looks like this female may have targeted businesses and cafes in Hove Street before going on to George Street.

"The total amount of money she had on her when she was arrested was in the region of £50.

"It is not a huge amount but if everyone gave between 25p and £1 then that adds up to a lot of victims.

"Most people would have given money because they have lost a friend or relative through cancer.

"I have spoken to the Marie Curie charity and they are mortified. They specifically don't authorise street collections."

Anyone with information should phone PC Carr at Hove police station on 0845 6070999.
