A 20-year-old who attacked a man he suspected of giving him a dirty look has been jailed.

Jamie Greenfield lured his victim to a confrontation under Eastbourne Pier where he punched him so hard he broke his jaw in two places.

At Lewes Crown Court Greenfield was given a nine-month sentence.

The court heard the unprovoked attack happened one night in July 2005. Kevin Tsang was left unconscious on the ground suffering from serious injuries.

He had a metal pin inserted into his broken jaw, chipped teeth and scarring on his face.

Greenfield, of Southdown Road, Eastbourne, denied causing grievous bodily harm but was convicted by a jury after a trial.

During the trial Greenfield claimed he launched the assault because he feared Mr Tsang was about to produce a knife from his pocket.

Judge Cedric Joseph told Greenfield he had acted in a callous manner when he left his victim unconscious and fled after the attack.

The judge said: "You lured the victim to meet you under the pier with the intention of setting about him and assaulting him.

"The only possible excuse was he gave you what you thought was a dirty look earlier in the evening.

"It was an unprovoked attack and I did not believe your story that the victim looked like he was going to pull a knife out of his pocket.

"It must have been absolutely obvious to you he had lost consciousness and was seriously injured but you behaved in a thoroughly callous way and ran off without taking any steps to assist him.

"There must be a custodial sentence."

Rob Hall, defending, said Greenfield, who has no previous convictions, was sorry for the injuries he caused.

He said: "He had a moment of madness. It was very much out of character."
