Opening act Anna Robinson welcomed the crowd to the inviting and snug surroundings of the Joogleberry, delivered a concise and skilled set with passion but without stealing the show.
Next up, the headline act, Brighton's own Laura Vane - session singer to The Streets and Gnarls Barkley - took the stage and made it her own.
Her professionalism shone through and her well honed set was perfect from start to finish. Her voice is not just amazing; it is distinctive, charged with sexual energy and sounds effortlessly cool.
After this came the unexpected Newton Faulkner, an absolute master of guitar technique. His playing is percussive and exciting and he managed to play the guitar and drums from Massive Attack's Teardrop simultaneously.
His set was quirky and impressive but he is, ultimately, not an artist - a fantastic entertainer all the same.
