A FOOTBALL star and his teammates took to the streets to get residents thinking more about small shops.

Albion players Bobby Zamora, Tomer Hemed, Beram Kayal and Dale Stephens caused a stir in The Lanes after American Express installed a power-generating pavement.

In a UK-first, when shoppers walk down the pavement their footsteps will make the Christmas lights sparkle, the new feature hopefully helping to promote small, independent shops.

Striker Zamora said: “We are pleased to be invited by American Express to come along today.

“We want to remind people all over the country to shop small and support their local high streets.”

The unique pavement will be in place until Sunday and the Seagulls’ players visit came ahead of Small Business Saturday UK this weekend.

Heather Laverne, vice president at American Express UK, said: “American Express has a long history of working with small businesses and for the third year running we are shining a light on small shops in the lead up to Small Business Saturday UK.

“We’re using this eye-catching and innovative pavement technology to bring to life the tangible impact we can all have on small businesses just by visiting our local high street.”
