It’s easy to laugh at Bad Manners.

Next year will see this original ska band’s 40th anniversary come round (and you can be sure they’ll return to Brighton to celebrate).

But they never really managed to maintain the same acclaim as the likes of 2-Tone peers such as The Specials or even Madness have, unfairly written off as a joke.

Which does Bad Manners a total disservice, as just as with any onstage comics, behind their ‘act’ lies a depth and skill many younger bands would kill for.

At Concorde 2, while understandably playing hits such as Lip Up Fatty, Special Brew and Can Can, the band also devoted plenty of time to demonstrate their impressive instrumental skills (possibly so singer buster Bloodvessel could go and have a sit down, but so what?), as well as a rare outing for a high watermark track from the Dance Craze movie, Inner London Violence.

But then, the seven-piece were back to joking around, bringing on Buster’s own dog for a round of Happy Birthday, sticking out their tongues and chanting crudely, not giving a damn if anyone laughed. In fact, they encouraged it - and the audience did the same.
