A YOUNG man died after being hit by a train at a level crossing.

Tommy Ramshaw was struck at the level crossing in Brunswick Road, Shoreham.

Police and paramedics went to the scene just after 1am on Saturday but the 20-year-old was pronounced dead while being rushed to hospital.

A Just Giving page has now been set up with the aim of giving Tommy the "best send-off ever".

His mother Jeanette Stanley said: "My son Tommy was tragically killed early on Saturday morning.

"Our family are devastated and so are lots of his friends.

"Various people are fundraising for him to help with funeral costs, for which we are overwhelmingly grateful.

"We have set up this page so that anyone wanting to donate, however small, can do so and it's all in one place.

"There's only one Tommy Ramshaw. Rest in peace my gorgeous boy."

The fund was aiming for £1,000 but has already surpassed £2,300.

This morning, there were also reports of people calling for an underpass at Shoreham Station to be reinstated.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "Any death on the railway is a tragedy and distressing for everyone involved.

“Shoreham level crossing is fitted with barriers, alarms and warning lights – which is the highest level of protection we can provide. It cannot be closed because of its location."

He said the constricted nature of the site meant a different foot crossing would be a serious logistical challenge. Level crossing equipment now sits where an old underpass entrance was, which closed in 1988.

Tommy's death is not being treated as suspicious and a file has been prepared for the coroner.
