Hair Peace is a storytelling show about Victoria Melody’s quest to uncover the mystery of who grew her hair extensions.
A committed anthropologist/artist, Melody entered the world of beauty pageants to question our culture of female beauty, replete with the obligatory hair extensions. Freaked out by wearing someone else’s hair she decided to find out where the hair was grown.
The show was cleverly structured and entertaining, weaving tales from meeting hair donors in India and Russia with onstage skits and physical comedy.
Victoria Melody has an endearing stage presence and an ease which allows her to get the audience involved and skirt technical issues charmingly.
Overall, the subject matter seemed a little inconsequential as Melody never had a true connection with the hair extensions; she felt that she was returning to her true self when she had them removed.
The enquiry might have touched a deeper nerve if she delved into why people go through the cost and pain of having extensions, or more details of the poor conditions in one of the Indian factories.
Despite the lightness of the story, Hair Peace is thought-provoking and the audience is ultimately left to draw their own conclusions about this unregulated multi-million pound industry.
