A SHORT film celebrating everything great about Brighton has won a prestigious award.

Directors Luke de la Nougerede and Matthew Green, of The Progress Film Company, beat nine other nominees to win Zooppa’s UK video of the year award for a 30-second film.

Luke, 26, and Matthew, 25, rose to the challenge of creating a short piece.

They found the variety and vibrancy of the city was the perfect subject matter.

Luke, who went to Oathall Community College pupil in Lindfield, said: "It’s the first award that Matt and I have won. We’re really pleased.

"It was quite surprising because we didn’t have a huge amount of time for it. It was very rewarding for all the effort we put in.

"Brighton is a really cool place to work, especially now, with summer coming around. It’s a really inspirational city. That’s why we chose to do the film here."

The busy seafront, the two piers and The Level all feature in the film.

Skaters are also in the film showing off their tricks and and there are even performers playing with fire.

Scenes transition in the fast-paced film through circles. Viewers are pulled through a bicycle wheel, the doughnut sculpture on the groyne and a hula-hoop before the final shot of the Brighton Wheel.

Matthew said: "We wanted to highlight that Brighton is a creative place to be. There is a huge variety of characters and people here which makes it really different to other cities."

Luke added: "We were worried it wouldn’t work out, but it came out well in the end."

Pitched projects had to be shot on Canon cameras only, which was a challenge for the directors who usually use equipment with additional features.

To meet the competition’s tight deadline, the project was put together in just three days.

The film won with more than twice as many votes as any other entry.

Based in Clifton Hill, Brighton, The Progress Film Company makes documentaries, online films and animations with its 15-strong.
