A FIGHT broke out at a non-league football match yesterday.

Fans of Whitehawk and Wealdstone were embroiled in a punch-up at the Enclosed Ground in Brighton towards the end of the game between the two sides.

The football fracas forced the bar to close as rival fans landed blows on each other.

Extra police were called to the stadium as the Hawks' 3-0 win over Wealdstone was drawing to a close.

The vocal game saw a bumper crowd of 724 fans, up by about 200 on the normal attendance.

About six police cars joined officers already at the Conference South match at about 4.45pm, and spent about an hour on the scene.

A Sussex Police spokesman told The Argus: "There was potential for it to kick off and further units were assigned.

"The offending fans were escorted away from the stadium."

It does not appear any arrests were made and The Argus understands no one pressed charges.

A statement from the club reads: "Whitehawk FC would like to thank its fans, stewards, staff and Sussex Police for their tolerance and good nature today in the face of some very poor behaviour from a significant minority of Wealdstone fans.

"Following the advice of the police, it was necessary to shut the bar and hold Whitehawk fans within the ground until the offending Wealdstone fans left the ground."
