This Newhaven incinerator site in the river valley will have greater health risks than other incinerators because of its location. The site is not much above sea level and is situated in the flood plain of the River Ouse.
This means the twin chimneys will be at a similar height to the densely populated residential areas of the surrounding downland.
So if something should go wrong, there could be very high levels of pollution at or near ground level in residential areas.
For example, an easterly wind would take pollution over Peacehaven, Telscombe, Saltdean, Rottingdean and onwards to Brighton.
Additionally, there is a danger of temperature inversions trapping pollution in the Ouse Valley.
Incineration is not a failsafe technology.
As with any mechanical, electromechanical or electronic systems, things can and do go wrong.
