The writer of the letter headed "A sad reflection" (Letters, May 30) seems to think that, in certain situations, people are entitled to wound animals with an air gun.
This is not the case.
The new law which he or she cites exists to protect animals, not those who abuse them. Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal carries a penalty of 51 weeks in prison and/or a £20,000 fine.
Has this brave (and anonymous) cat hater never heard of water pistols or other simple deterrents?
Of course, those who hate or fear cats will use any excuse to harm them.
Blaming cat owners for some thug shooting their pets is utter rubbish. In most cases, unless mental impairment is proved, crime is the fault of the criminal and no one else.
