Rosie Wilby has been on the comedy circuit since 2004, when her between song banter as a singer songwriter was well received enough to earn her a place in the semi-finals of the So You Think You’re Funny competition.

She’s performed at the Edinburgh Festival as well as various venues around the country, and is a regular radio broadcaster, so it was a surprise to find her performing at The Iron Duke’s tiny theatre.

It all made sense when the show started, however.

While ‘The Conscious Uncoupling’ had sounded promising, with the words ‘poignant’ and ‘brilliant’ on the flyer, it turned out to be a little lacklustre.

The fact that there were only 16 people in the audience didn’t help – it’s difficult to get much of an atmosphere when a venue has more empty seats than full – but the material was patchy, with Wilby’s theatrical style being more amateur than dramatic.

A show about the end of a relationship could have made for some good comedy, but instead we got a rather awkward mix of storytelling and reading out emails from an ex-girlfriend, with the odd wry observation.

The likeable comedian has a winning smile, and the occasional well-observed comment did raise the odd chuckle.

But it was all a bit too low-key and gentle to produce any real belly laughs.
