Pupils slipping behind in the classroom will receive one-to-one tuition under a new Government experiment at dozens of schools across East Sussex.

The Argus can today reveal the names of 51 primary and secondary schools taking part in the scheme, which is aimed at helping pupils reach their full potential.

East Sussex County Council is one of just ten local authorities across the country chosen to participate in the trial, which will begin at the start of the new academic year in September.

It will focus on children in Key Stages Two and Three, aged from seven to 14.

Under the pilot, under-achievers at the chosen schools - roughly one quarter of East Sussex's total - will receive up to ten hours of personal tutoring in English and ten hours in maths over the year in addition to their usual classroom hours.

The extra tuition, aimed at those who could do better - from highachievers to those with behavioural problems - will be provided by qualified teachers.

Pupils' progress will be reported to the Department for Education and Skills.

As part of a package to provide "personalised" learning, children who improve more quickly than others will also be allowed to take national tests at Key Stages Two and Three as soon as they are ready.

The two-year project will also set new targets for schools to make sure they are helping pupils move forward properly.

Schools which succeed stand to win bonus payments - worth several hundred pounds per pupil - to re-invest in education.

Matt Dunkley, director of children's services at East Sussex County Council, said: "We were delighted to be one of only ten authorities in the country who were chosen to take part in the pilot. We have now agreed with the DfES which schools will take part, and we hope it will make a real impact on improving students' progress."

Nationally, £20 million will be made available to provide extra tuition for up to 10,000 children at 484 schools over the first year of the scheme.
