Tommy Allsup is a fine western guitarist with a distinguished history.
Not dying in the air crash which killed Buddy Holly should not be his only claim to fame. However, without that connection, it's unlikely he would have been in Brighton.
Kevin Montgomery opened with a Q&A session and Tommy enraptured the audience with stories of how he met Buddy and the events of the crash but highlights were demonstrations of the playing styles of his two favourite guitarists, Eldon Shamblin and T-Bone Walker.
The second half consisted mostly of Buddy's hits but, again, the highlights were non-Holly related. Bob Will's Texas Playboys theme, The New San Antonio Rose, went down a treat.
When encores were called for, Tommy played a hymn and was plainly moved when it ended - perhaps paying his respects to Buddy in his own quiet way.
