A 27-year-old soldier will appear in court today charged with the illegal possession of ammunition, Scotland Yard said.
Sussex-based Private Christopher Trussler was arrested yesterday by anti gun-crime police over the sale of army-issue bullets.
The arrest was part of an operation launched after 21 rounds of 9mm ammunition were sold in the Chichester area in late May.
Trussler was arrested at Baker Barracks, Thorney Island, near Chichester, West Sussex.
He will appear in custody at Chichester Magistrates' Court today charged with possession of ammunition contrary to the Firearms Act 1968.
Officers from Scotland Yard's Operation Trident team, which combats gun crime in the black community, are believed to have been acting on a tip-off.
Detective Sergeant Neil Lennon of Operation Trident said: "The ammunition we believe this soldier was selling would have been compatible with a number of types of firearms.
"It would undoubtedly have the potential to have an extremely harmful effect on a number of communities, and Trident remains committed to tackling those who seek to profit from the misery of others."
