ALLOTMENTS, barbecues, Brighton seafront, the North Laine and the Ashdown Forest are among the suggestions being put forward for those taking part in our One Summer’s Day competition.

The Argus has chosen Saturday (June 25) as the day when we are asking people to grab a camera and capture a moment which reflects what Sussex and summer means to them.

Brighton and Hove lead councillor for tourism, Alan Robins has two possible locations in mind.

He said: “I would go down to the seafront, between the two piers and take a look around there as there is always something going on.

“Personally I also like to go up to the Mile Oak Farm area as well. I have an allotment in the Old Village in Portslade and I’m often up there in the summer.

“That’s where I’ll probably be this Saturday.”

A lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon at home with a BBQ with friends and family represent a summer’s day for The Argus head of content Lucy Pearce.

She said: “Nothing says summer more than a BBQ.

“I love it when my friends or family are round at mine enjoying good food and nice weather.

“It always makes me smile when I happen to look down from an upstairs window at the view of everyone in the garden having a good time.

“If I could capture an image to represent a summer’s day, it would be that one.”

North Laine Trader’s Association chairman David Sewell unsurprisingly finds that particular area of the city the place that sums summer for him.

He said: “I would go to North Laine and try to get a shot that capture the vibrancy of the area. On a summer Saturday you can really see it as there are so many people around.”

Last year’s winner Annette Radford, 57, from Woodingdean, is also planning to take part again this year.

She said: “I haven’t made any particular plans on where I’m going or what I’m doing yet. I think it’s actually better to have no arrangements made and just see how the day goes.

“If you go about doing what you normally would do you’ll eventually find something that works. Sometimes the best things are right there on your doorstep without you realising.”

Jess Price, a conservation officer at the Sussex Wildlife Trust, said she would choose the Old Lodge nature reserve in the Ashdown Forest.

She said: “I love the ancient heathland landscape, with its bright streaks of purple heather and yellow gorse, and Old Lodge is particularly special to me because it’s the first place I saw a nightjar, my favourite bird.”

The competition, sponsored by photography experts Jessops, is open to amateur and professional photographers.
