A teenager was killed after being hit by a train yesterday.

British Transport Police officers were called to Wivelsfied Station at 10.24am after reports of a person being struck by a train.

Paramedics attended the scene in the town between Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath, alongside police but the young man, 19, died at the scene.

Police were seeking to identify the victim before notifying the family.

The death was not treated as suspicious and a file was being prepared for the coronor.

The train was a Bedford to Brighton service and commuters were warned to expect delays of up to 90 minutes while lines were closed between Brighton and Haywards Heath. A replacement bus service was arranged.
