A HIGH-wire tourist attraction will open this June, giving Brighton’s beleaguered seafront a much needed boost.

Organisers behind the Brighton Zip say the 22.5 metre tall attraction will bring a buzz to Madeira Drive when it opens this summer.

In a second boost to the area, Soho House bosses say they hope to begin construction work on their delayed £60 million private members’ club and restaurants development later this year.

The news will offer some comfort following the significant blow last Monday when Brighton and Hove City Council’s bid for £4 million of government funding for Madeira Terraces was rejected.

Minister Sajid Javid told Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby the council had failed to meet the planning requirements for the scheme because of a lack of design work, planning application or match funding.

The bid also missed out because it would not deliver immediate impact as work is not due to start for almost two years.

In the absence of progress on the Terraces, businesses are concerned visitors will avoid the area.

However, the arrival of the Zip this summer will provide cheer for the area, filling the void left by The Brighton Wheel which was forced to leave the city as part of the i360 planning agreement.

Workers will be on site next month to begin construction of the Brighton Zip, which is expected to take between four and six weeks.

The 300 metre long attraction had initially hoped to open at the tail end of last summer but the plans had to be shelved after a planning decision was delayed.

The Paramount Entertainments’ thrill ride hopes to attract up to 32,000 customers annually and has been described as “a sporty alternative to the i360”.

Work on a two-storey 140-cover restaurant café with open terrace will now take place in the off-season.

General manager Delso De Silva said: “We are very excited about the project and we are all looking forward to a very good summer. The design is totally bespoke for Brighton, it will be like no attraction anywhere else.

“It will be very good for Madeira Drive especially since it’s been nearly a year since the Wheel went. A lot of the vendors are really excited about us opening.”

A Soho House spokeswoman said: “We’re really excited about Brighton and planning to start work later this year, we’re just finalising the design details now.

“We’re in contact with the local community on membership and have had lots of interest already.”
