BRIGHTON’S driveways are being rented out as parking spaces for more money than anywhere else outside of London.

Residents fortunate enough to have a parking space they do not need stand to make an average of £1,700 per year by leasing it online to tourists and travellers.

Research from yourparkingspace.co.uk puts Brighton second only to the capital where spaces can bring in an average of £2,400 a year.

Michael Craggs, 27, told The Argus he made money from his Seven Dials parking space with the minimum of effort.

He said: “I own a flat in Prestonville Court and it comes with a parking space in the complex but I don’t need it because I don’t have a car.

“A friend mentioned that I should rent it out.

“I googled how to do it and I signed up.”

“I’ve been doing it for around a year now and it’s great.

“I get £10 per day and the site takes some fees obviously.”

He said he hadn’t had any commuters using the space but it was booked out frequently at weekends by tourists looking for an inexpensive place to park near the centre of town.

“In my case I probably make around £40 or £50 per month, it depends on the month and what’s going on.

“I’ve just got a four-month booking actually, through the whole of the summer, although obviously I gave them a big discount.

“But it means I don’t have to worry about getting other people.”

Mr Craggs, who works in finance in Brighton, said he would strongly recommend other follow suit.

He said: “I haven’t had a single bad experience.

“It genuinely helps pay the mortgage. I need all the money I can get.”

The figures from yourparkingspace.co.uk showed the London borough of Kensington and Chelsea topped the list of the most money to be made, with residents earning £3,367 on average.

Brighton came second with an average of £1,761 earned through the site while northern cities Leeds and Manchester also finished in the top five, earning £1,544 and £1,476 respectively.

Harrison Woods, managing director of yourparkingspace.co.uk, said, “These results demonstrate that there are potentially very lucrative money earning opportunities across the UK from renting a driveway, garage or secure parking space.

“Meanwhile, an increasing number of businesses with spare parking capacity are also registering.

“It’s very simple to do and unlocks a potentially significant revenue stream, in many cases just by being close to local amenities.”
