THE Level has been plagued with problems ever since its makeover in 2013.

More than £2.2 million was spent on it with the hope it would become the go-to park for those in central Brighton.

But, as has been reported in this paper on numerous occasions, the park has become a haven for drug use and drug dealing.

Antisocial behaviour is also a massive problem.

There has been a lot of talk but very little action. Until now.

Yesterday Brighton and Hove City Council announced major security improvements for the park.

This includes more CCTV, better lighting and more police patrols.

The sides of two play units will be reduced to half the height with a more open slatted design to improve visibility of children on the equipment and interlopers who should not be there.

There will also be an increase in visits from sniffer dogs.

These improvements will come at a cost – but it will be worth it.

The Level has all the makings of a fantastic city centre park.

The equipment there is first rate, there is a good cafe and an excellent skate park.

If the council and police get on top of the problems then it could be the much-needed facility in the city centre it was hoped it could be.

It is ideally located for thousands of families in the city centre and is also one of the first green spaces visitors to the city see.

More than £2.2 million of public money has gone into creating the park.

What a waste it would be if we surrendered it to the drug dealers and undesirables.

Let’s hope these improvements will get The level back on track.
