THE defence is due to begin in the trial of a man accused of the murder of one girlfriend and the manslaughter of another.

Jurors were sent home yesterday to return on Monday morning in the trial of Robert Trigg, 52, from Worthing, who is charged with the murder of his partner Susan Nicholson in 2011 and the manslaughter of girlfriend Caroline Devlin, whose body was found on Mother’s Day in 2006.

Trigg said that he “accidentally suffocated” Ms Nicholson when they were sleeping together on a sofa at her house.

He weighed almost twice as much as her, Lewes Crown Court has heard.

The prosecution finished its evidence in court yesterday after hearing the accounts of pathologists tasked with reviewing the post mortems carried out on both women.

Trigg pleads not guilty to both charges.
